Obituary for Lawrence Arthur Rancilio

Lawrence Arthur Rancilio died on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at his home in Grosse Pointe Woods surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 13, 1940 in Detroit to the late Arthur Joseph and the late Josephine Elvira (nee: Garbarino) Rancilio.

Larry was born and raised in Detroit. He attended St. Juliana for Grade School. He chose to attended Austin Catholic Preparatory School where he graduated in 1957 as the President of the school’s second graduating class. After graduation, Larry received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Mathematics from University of Detroit Mercy. He continued his education at Saginaw Valley State University where he received his Master’s Degree in Education Administration.

Larry, or better known as “Mr. Rance”, began his teaching career as a Math Teacher at Austin Catholic Preparatory School. He also was the Football Coach and Disciplinarian. Leaving behind many of his beloved students, Mr. Rance made a move to L’Anse Creuse Public Schools where he began as a Math Teacher. It didn’t take long before he was moving up the ladder to Assistant Principal and then Principal before he finally landed the position of Assistant Superintendent in charge of Human Resources.

Larry loved University of Michigan Football (GO BLUE!), golf, and his children and grandchildren. He cherished his time going to his kids and grandkids’ activities.

Although Larry loved many things, his wife, Nancy, was the greatest love of his life. The couple met in 1964 through a mutual friend who happened to be a priest and thought they would be the “best catholic couple”. The couple wed in 1966 at St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park. They began their lives together and were ultimately blessed with three children.

Larry is described by all as a loving and kind-hearted man. Also known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he lived an extremely full life and will be missed by all those who knew him.

Larry was the beloved husband of Nancy. Loving father of Amy McGill, Lynn (Rick) Scholl, and Lawrence G. (Nicole Wilkins) Rancilio. Cherished grandpa of Carly, Megan, Nicole, Stephanie, Nicholas, and Benjamin.

Visitation for Mr. Rancilio will be held on Sunday, August 4 from 2 pm until 8 pm with a 7pm Scripture Service at Chas.
