Obituary

Melida Bernert, age 82, of Eastpointe died on July 7, 2019 at her home. She was born on March 5, 1937 in Poland to the late Otto and Emma (nee: Wiebolt) Somschor.

In 1956 Melida moved to the United States and settled in Detroit. In the following years, Melida met the love of her life, Johann, and the couple married on August 25, 1962 at St. Peter Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with five children.

Melida spent her life caring for her family. When the children moved out, Melida had some time to herself. She joined the German Choir to fill up her free time. Melida had a passion for gardening and especially loved her roses. When Melida was not in the garden, you could catch her crocheting.

Melida loved the "Golden Girls" as well as "I Love Lucy" and various Lifetime Movies. She also loved to travel back home to Germany as often as she could.

Melida was a devout Lutheran and long-time parishioner of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eastpointe. She attended church every Sunday until she could not go anymore.

Melida was the beloved wife of the late Johann who died on May 18, 2013. She was the beloved mother of Johann (Jolene) Bernert, Doris (Nicholas) Wisniewski, Melanie (James) Coffman, Lynette Knightstep, and Michael (Kelly) Bernert. She was the loving Oma of Emily, Christopher, Stefanie, Brendan, Shelby, Giavanna, Zachary, Jacob, and Emma.

Visitation for Melida will be on Wednesday, July 10 at The Schultz Chapel of Chas. Verheyden, Inc. Funeral Home, 21705 Gratiot Ave. Eastpointe, MI 48021, from 3 pm to 8 pm. We had many wonderful GBU Choir times together, drove together to the Carpathia Hall for practice, and enjoyed activities and trips to Germany frequently through the years. I first met Melida when we both went to the evening classes "English for the Foreign Born" at Grosse Pointe North High School in 1958. Fond memories. Marianne Krenzer
