Dr. Michael McKenzie, Age 74,passed away Friday, June 28th in Grosse Pointe Park. Beloved husband of Katy, nee Heenan. Dear father of Kelly Woolums (Chad), Molly Dunlap (Todd), Michael McKenzie (Rachel), Ryan McKenzie (Martha). Cherished "Pops" of Cassidy, Evan, Andrew Woolums, Ben, Jake, Cole Dunlap, Dottie, Tilly, Henry McKenzie, Everett, Annie and Conor McKenzie. Brother of 5 and uncle and great uncle of many. Over the years, he practiced medical oncology at 6 hospitals in the local area as well as serving as Director of Hospice of SE Michigan in 1980's and Henry Ford Hospice in Wyandotte. Michael enjoyed life to the fullest. Michael and Katy were high school sweethearts and just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He always had a special love for golden retrievers and will be dearly missed by his adoring "Maddie". Michael enjoyed being with his family, traveling, reading a good book, a good movie, good food, and sports. He attended The University of Nebraska on a Football scholarship and graduated from Wayne State University and went on to pursue his medical degree from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. His wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all that knew him. A special thanks to all of the caregivers at Residential Hospice for their dedicated support and service. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 30, 3:00 - 8:00 pm at Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, Inc. 16300 Mack Ave. Grosse Pointe Park. Funeral will be Monday at 11:00 am Mass at St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic Church, 1401 Whittier, Grosse Pointe Park, with visitation from 10:30 until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to a charity of your choice is appreciated. Share a memory at

Dr. McKenzie was my preceptor when I was a medical student, intern and resident. Despite what many perceived as a growly demeanor, we got along fabulously. He was a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. I remember him most for the compassion he showed his patients. My condolences to his family and friends. The Osteopathic community has lost a giant.
