Sarah Kaysserian was born Sarah Mamassian on July 1, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan to Lucy and Harry Mamassian. Her father died when she was just 5 years old and things were difficult for Sarah and her Mother, Grandmother and 3 siblings.

As soon as she was old enough, Sarah began working. She attended Commerce Business High School, in Detroit, where she co-oped...attending school for half the day and working at Michigan Mutual Insurance Company for half the day. After graduation she worked full-time as a bookkeeper at Michigan Mutual for several years.

Sarah was a long-standing member of St. John’s Armenian Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. It was at St. John’s where she met Mike Kaysserian. Sarah and Mike were married in 1953 and spent their first year of marriage living at Fort Leonard Wood Army base in Missouri. Upon Mike’s discharge from the army Sarah and Mike moved back to the Detroit area.

Her Armenian friends and community were extremely important to Sarah and you could often find her baking in the kitchen of St. John’s and working at the Bazaar. Not only did she bake for Church, but until her last days she was still baking halka and v-cookies for friends and family, and especially her grandchildren.

Sarah and Mike loved being “up north” in northern Michigan. They enjoyed it so much that Mike built a house near Leland that Sarah designed. This beautiful home is still often referred to as “Sarah’s House.” Mike and Sarah spent as much time as possible entertaining family and friends up north.

Sarah was always stylish and fashionable. She rose every morning fixed her hair, put on her makeup and got dressed for the day. In 2009 she made one of last flashy statements. When Mike asked her what type of car she would like, she replied “the 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang…in Red”. So at 80 years of age, Sarah was cruising Grosse Pointe in her Red Mustang. Although she purchased something a bit easier to get in and out of several years later…her red Mustang remains in the family to this day.

Sarah loved her family, her friends, and her Detroit Tigers. Granddaughter Kylie would write out the Tiger TV schedule for her each season and she would watch them play as often as possible.

Although not known to be an athlete herself, Sarah bowled for over 50 years in the East Side Early Birds bowling League, finally hanging up her bowling shoes just last year at the age of 90.

She also loved her Armenian Church and has a recording of the Armenian Church service. Her family knew that if you called on Sunday between 9 & 10 you would hear the service in the background because Grandma was “Doing Church.”

. Beloved wife of the late Michael M. Kaysserian. Dearest mother of Dr. Kerry (Donna) Kaysserian, Kiana (Bob) Rose. Loving grandmother of Mallory (Katie) Kaysserian, Kevin Kaysserian, Kylie Rose and Michael Rose. Also survived by the Mamassian, Javizian, and Hazergian families.

Visiting Friday 4-8 p.m. with Dan Gark prayers at 7:30 p.m. at Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack Ave. (West of Cadieux), Grosse Pointe Park. The family will also receive friends in St. John Armenian Church, 22001 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield, Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until funeral service at 10 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery.

ISara, my special friend will remain in my heart forever.
It was my pleasure to have known you.
Though the years we’ve shared lots of laughs, a few tears and good times together.
I will miss your beautiful smile.
My prayers go out to your family and other great friends through this difficult time.
You are now reunited now with your loving husband Mike.
Our loss is God’s gain in heaven where I know he welcomed you with open arms.
